FAQ on Backup and Restore in Tally.ERP9

FAQ-1 : How do I Restore the Backup taken earlier, in Tally.ERP 9?

Follow the steps mentioned below to restore the backup taken on another media:

  1. Go to Gateway of Tally, click on the button F3: Cmp Info provided in the buttons toolbar or press Alt+F3 using the keyboard.

  2. Select Restore

  3. In the Restore Companies on Disk screen provide the following paths:

    1. Destination: This is the folder where the backup data is restored.

    2. Source: This is the folder which contains the backup data files, it can be a folder on the same device or another device connected to the computer. 

Note: The Source and the Destination paths displayed in this screen are those which were last used.

4. Select the name of the company from the List of Companies, for the data to be restored. You can select one or more companies from the List of Companies to restore it. Select End of List to stop selecting the companies.

5. Press Y or the Enter button in response to the query ‘Accept? Yes or No’.

FAQ-2 : How to Restore Auto Backup Data ?

To restore the data backup taken using the auto backup utility follow the steps shown:

In the Company Info or Gateway of Tally

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+K

  • Press Enter to select the default path of respective company where the auto backup file is stored or you can enter the path of your choice.
  • Select the required company from the List of Companies Displayed.

On restoring the auto backup data a new folder for the respective company is created, this folder is uniquely identified as it begins with the number 9. 

For Example:
The data of ABC Company is stored in the data folder numbered 10001, on restoring the auto backup of ABC Company a new folder numbered 90001 is created in the data folder.

On restoring the auto backup data in a new folder, auto backup utility prompt the user to overwrite.

  • Click Yes or press Y to proceed with the restoration of data 
Note: When the data is corrupted it is suggested to restore the previous version of the auto backup available before rewriting the corrupt data. The latest auto backup version can be known by looking for the latest the time stamp in List of Auto Backup Versions.

FAQ-3 : How to Restore Auto Backup File Using the Restore Functionality in Company Info. screen ?

Restore means return to the original, usable and functional condition. The Restore functionality allows you to restore the data backup taken earlier.

The existing Restore utility is enhanced with an additional capability to restore data backup of multiple companies taken using the Auto Backup feature. The backup of multiple companies is stored in a single file named TABK.900 in the user defined path provided while configuring auto backup.

While restoring the auto backup data, Tally.ERP 9 displays the backup version followed by the last update time. This allows the user to select and restore the latest backup.

The user must ensure the following points before restoring data backup:

  • Do not restore old or irrelevant data.
  • Do not restore data from a damaged media.
  • Do not restore data in the same folder as existing data, since it may overwrite the existing data.

To restore the back-up taken on another media, execute the following steps:

  • Go to Gateway of Tally > Press Alt + F3 or click F3: Cmp Info

The Company Info menu appears

· Select Restore.

The Restore Companies on Disk screen appears, enter the following details

  • Destination – is the path or the folder where data backup needs to be restored.
  • Source – is the folder or path where data backup file or auto backup files for multiple companies are stored. The path specified can be on the same storage device/external storage device or a storage device on the network.

Note: The last provided source and the destination paths are populated and displayed.

Restore

In the BackUp section 

· Select the required company or companies from List of Companies displayed to restore the data or select All Items to restore data of all the companies available.

Note: To restore Auto Backup of multiple companies, select End of List in Name of Companies under Backup.

  • Accept to continue restoring the data backup.

  • Select the required Version of backup

Similarly, select the required companies from the List of Companies displayed and select the required backup Version from the List of Auto Backup Versions.

  • Select End of List to complete the selection of companies

Or

  • Select All Items to restore the latest backup versions of all the available companies
  • Accept to restore the auto backup of selected or all companies

FAQ-4 : Unable to Access Auto Backup C:/Program Files/Tally.ERP9/AutoBackup ?

This error occurs when either ABK file or TABK file is missing from their respective location or folder. Also, the error occurs due to corrupted ABK or TABK file.

To fix this issue,

1. Press Alt+F1 or click F1:Shut Company from Gateway of Tally

2. Click F12: Configure button or press F12 > select Data Configuration

3. Set Enable Auto Backup Copy to No

4. Reload the company
Once the company loads successfully,

  1. Go to the location of the TABK (Auto Backup File) (specified in F12 : Data Configuration

  2. Cut the TABK file from this folder and paste it in another location or folder and restart Tally.ERP 9

  3. Load the company again, go to F12 > Data Configuration, set Yes to Enable Auto Backup Copy and enter the previous location path in Location of Auto Backup file (TABK)

To avoid this in the future, ensure connectivity between client and server is established. For this, follow the given steps:

  1. Add Tally.exe, Tallyadmin.exe, *.tsf and *.900 to the program exclusion list of the antivirus software in all the systems i.e server and client.

  2. Ensure data folder is shared with full control for all network users.

  3. Check the ping speed from client to server i.e ping IP address -t for example, Ping 192.168.2.254 -t and ensure that ping speed is less than 3ms and there is no variation. Also, stop or uninstall the unwanted services (if any) running in the server.

To check the ping speed, 

  1. Click Start button on your Windows desktop

  2. Enter cmd in Search programs and files field and press Enter

  3. In the Command Prompt, type ping 192.168.2.254 –t and 

  4. Press Enter

Note: If you are pinging server from client system, enter server IP address and vice versa. Tally.Erp 9 : Backup and Restore
